8 Beautiful Travel Destinations (If You’re Okay With Dying) (2 of 5)
Death Road, Bolivia
Looking to travel from the Bolivian capital of La Paz to the town of Coroico? Once upon a time, it would have required you to take a dirt track that clung to cliffs around 2 miles (3.2km) above sea level. And no guardrails, mind you. However, there was plenty of fog, downpours, landslides, and traffic moving in both directions simultaneously. We’re talking about North Yungas Road. Although it is aptly nicknamed “Death Road,” it remains a popular route for thrill seekers. Over the course of decades, hundreds of people on the treacherous journey plunged into the jungle ravines below, never to be seen again. These days a modern highway connects the two places, but Death Road is still open to thrill seekers, particularly downhill cyclists who have no fear.
Anak Krakatoa, Indonesia
As your boat approaches Anak Krakatoa, you probably think to yourself, “Wow! An island that looks like any of the other thousands that form the Indonesian archipelago!” You might mean it sarcastically or, if you happen to be an island buff, enthusiastically. Either way, you’d be dead wrong! Back in 1883, this island emerged from the sea after one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions ever recorded. The explosion triggered massive tsunamis that killed around 36,000 people. To this day, Anak Krakatoa erupts frequently, continuing to cause tsunamis that take lives without any warning. For this reason, it’s nearly impossible to get near the island without special permission from the Indonesian government.
